Course Description
Metaphysical poetry expresses the otherwise inexpressible or ineffable. This course presents selections of visionary & sacred writings & illuminated manuscripts from twenty-two centuries of representative literature. It ranges across a spectrum of cultural traditions & spiritual beliefs. The study focuses on "Song of Songs": Canticles, metaphysical opus of Hildegard von Bingen, ecstatic ghazals of Rumi, allegorical epic of Dante, wit poetry of Donne, visionary satire of Blake, and sacred poetry of Hopkins.
